Barn Star quilt featuring Pepper & Flax by Corey Yoder

I’ve been project hopping lately.  I’m not sure what’s wrong with me, but I don’t recall ever having so many projects in the hopper at the same time. Rather than analyzing my problem, I’ve decided to just go with it and enjoy myself. Sewing, after all, should bring us joy. And apparently, I’m finding joy in following my heart and sewing what calls me. The latest thing to call me . . . Corey Yoder’s Barn Star pattern and her delicious Pepper & Flax collection for Moda.

This simple yet striking pattern pays homage to the wonderful painted barn quilts you see in many rural areas of the United States. Barn Star finishes at 40\” square and sews up so quickly, making it a great weekend project. The generous size of the pieces also lends itself to showing off a pretty focal fabric, such as the Eyelet Summer Blooms print from Pepper & Flax.

Corey’s original Barn Star quilt is glorious and features a two-color scheme: yellow (daisy) and gray (granite), from her Pepper & Flax collection. I decided to add a third color to my quilt. I chose one of my favorite prints from Pepper & Flax, the green (sprig) Queen Anne’s Lace.

I ordered my Pepper & Flax yardage for this project from my friend and sponsor, LouLou’s Fabric Shop. Well, truth be told, I may have also ordered a fat quarter bundle as well. (When my heart speaks, I listen!) The photo below shows some of my loot . . . including a ceramic button coaster that just happens to coordinate with the fabric!  These cute coasters are also available at LouLou’s!

I’m contemplating quilting this top myself. I think straight-line quilting on the diagonal in a colored thread would just be fabulous. I’ll have to ponder that for a while. I’ll also have to ponder what I should make with that fat quarter bundle. For now, it is just a pretty decoration in my sewing room, another way quilting brings me joy!
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today.  Here\’s to getting carried away project hopping!

  1. a beautiful table topper or wall hanging! Love it! I want a REAL barn quilt and hope to make one some day (yep-for my barn out back 🙂 )for now i'm going to try and paint something small to hang on the front of the house. Anyway, i love this pattern and the fabrics are so cozy. You will have fun with your next project!

  2. Hi Taunja…..I always enjoy seeing what you’re sewing and quilting. Today I took a peek at your little quilt and said “Hey, I just bought that fabric:)”. I especially love your fabric choices in all the beautiful quilts you show us. I hope to do your pattern, Window Garden, soon. I haven’t been able to do much sewing the last 6 months just because of busy family life, but every time I open an email from you, I want to go straight to my sewing machine!!

  3. Yes, when our heart speaks – we need to listen :)! Your beautiful quilt with the Pepper & Flax fabric is just lovely! I was sooooo happy to receive this same beautiful fabric in our last Sew Sampler Box!
