Chunky autumn granny squares

Last weekend while watching the final days of the Olympics, I began crocheting some additional pumpkins. Both my daughter and a good quilting friend have put in their requests. As I was crocheting, I wondered what a granny square would look like using that chunkier yarn. So, as often happens to me when quilting, I had a squirrel moment and quickly dashed from one project to another. The end result was these darling chunky granny squares!

To make these cuties, I used the same tutorials that I’ve used before:

And I used the same yarn and hook that I used for the crocheted pumpkins: Lion Brand Re-spun Thick & Quick (in colors Wisteria, Whipped Cream and Squash and a Clover Amour Crochet Hook (M/N 9.0 mm)

Using a chunkier thread and bigger hook meant that these two granny squares ended up being roughly 8” square. I love the look of them, but I haven’t quite decided what I’ll do with them yet. Maybe I’ll crochet another round on each, join them together and make a cute little 10” pillow. Maybe I’ll leave them alone and use them as autumn mug rugs. Maybe I’ll crochet more of them throughout the year and have an awesome blanket come next fall.  Oh, the possibilities are endless.

Rather than annoy you with my enthusiasm over this new hobby, I hope I’ve encouraged you to give it a try if the spirit moves you. There are so many things that I enjoy about crochet: being able to work on a project while in the company of people I love, the satisfaction that comes from making something small and pretty in one sitting, and the contentment that comes from the quiet and simple rhythm of the stitching. It’s pretty good!

Here are some of my crochet posts to tempt you:

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful week, quilting friends!
