Very Gingham Valentine with granny square friends

Last night I fully intended to put away most of my Christmas decorations. My plan was to take down the Christmas tree and other holiday items but leave out some winter greens and twinkle lights. (When you live in Minnesota, you need that indoor pick-me-up until spring arrives.) My plan was foiled the minute I opened the quilt cabinet and pulled out my Very Gingham Valentine table runner. I felt compelled to grab my yarn and crochet something in those same colors! What a better way to spend an evening!

If you’ve been following my crochet journey, you may remember that I started working on taupe and pink granny squares last summer, using just four colors of Scheepjes yarn (sport weight): Axinite, Boulder Opal, Moon Stone and Rose QuartzI made a pin cushion from the first of those granny squares, and it sits proudly in my sewing room today. After making the pin cushion, I continued to make pink and taupe granny squares every once in a while.

Last night I decided to add a bolder pink to the mix: Carnelian. (I also used that color on the granny square pillow that coordinates with my Pink Patchwork Christmas quilt.) While my “starter” granny squares were soft and sweet, I do like vibrant pop of color that the Carnelian brings to the mix. Just what I need during January!

I’m not 100% sure what these granny squares will become . . . a pillow, a tablemat, a tote bag, or just a stack of cuteness. Maybe I should really go wild and make a blanket! For now, the journey of making them is so much fun, and that is what I’m focused on. In case you are wondering, my new scissors and sheath photographed below are from Fat Quarter Shop: Kimberly’s Vintage Scissors. I ordered it recently, and I just love it! It’s a nice size, very sharp and so pretty! My crochet hook of choice for these granny squares is a Clover Amour hook, size G 4.0mm.
