Easy Placemat & Napkin Tutorial

Thank you to Fort Worth Fabric Studio for the lovely Tuscan Garden fat quarter bundle used in this project.  My finished Tuscan Garden placemats are 19 1/2” x 14 1/2” and the napkins are 9 1/2” x 9 1/2”. Both are very simple construction, intended to let the fabrics steal the show.  If you’d like to make something similar, I’ve included some basic measurements and steps below.

Placemats (Yield 2)

For the placemat tops, cut the following pieces from (4) fat quarters:
For the placemat backs, cut the following pieces from (2) fat quarters:
Also cut the following:
Assembly:
Using a 1/4” seam allowance, sew the placemat top strips together, pressing to the darker fabric.  Finished top should measure 20” x 15”.

Using fabric spray adhesive, lightly spray and adhere the batting pieces to the back side of both tops.  You may add a few quilting lines at this point if you’d like. I stitched one simple line along the aqua fabric to secure the batting to the top.  I did not add a piece of muslin behind.  Using my walking foot and a longer stitch, I did not have any problems with the batting catching.

Lay the placemat back right sides together with the placemat top and pin them together. Stitch around all four sides, leaving a four-inch turning hole.

Turn the placemat inside out.  Push out all four corners and press. Turn under the edges of the four-inch turn hole, press and pin. Sew around the entire placemat to give a nice finished edge and secure the turn hole.

Napkins (Yield 2)
For the napkins, cut the following pieces from (2) fat quarters:
Damask:  (2) squares 10” x 10”
Aqua Botanical:  (2) squares 10” x 10”
  1. Pair a damask square with a botanical square.  Lay the pieces right sides together and stitch around all four sides, leaving a four-inch turn hole.
  2. Turn the napkin inside out.  Push out all four corners and press.
  3. Turn under the edges of the four-inch turn hole, press and pin.
  4. Sew around the entire napkin to give a nice finished edge and secure the turn hole.
