New pattern: Buffalo Check Christmas Runner

I am a buffalo check girl. I have buffalo check pillows on our living room sofa, buffalo check napkins in the dining room, and even buffalo check curtains in the guest room. I recently debuted two new patterns, Buffalo Check Autumn and Buffalo Check Winter, which both feature this favorite motif. Today I have another fun pattern to show you, Buffalo Check Christmas Runner!

This holiday runner exudes timeless, homespun charm. Simple trees and scrappy stars rest upon a foundation of the classic buffalo check.  I laid out my new runner with some plates, napkins and simple greens.  Now I can’t wait to decorate my winter table using this runner as my focal point. Buffalo Check Christmas Runner is generous in length, finishing at 56 1/2” x 12 1/2.”

Creating the 16-patch star centers was my favorite part of making this runner. Although only one charm pack is needed, I broke open two charm packs I had been hoarding: “Christmas Card” and “Merry Starts Here” by Sweetwater (Moda).  I selected my favorite prints and then fussy cut some of them so that little Christmas messages would appear. (You could just as easily sew the 16-patches from your scrap bucket.) The red star points are from the “Return to Winter’s Lane” collection by Kate & Birdie (Moda)

My evergreen trees are made using a green print from Sweetwater and a green print from “Wintertide” by Janet Clare (Moda). The stump fabric is called Brown Crow Tracks from Riley Blake’s “Calico Crow” collection. Again, these are all fabrics I had been saving.  The great thing about a runner project is that fabric requirements are often so small, you may have much of what you need right in your own fabric closet!

I was already quite happy with my runner when I finished the piecing and shipped it to Starlit Quilts for machine quilting. But I was absolutely tickled when I received the runner back from Star. The quilting motif that she selected is perfect, don’t you agree?  The scale is right on, and the simple repetitive pattern so nicely accentuates the piecing.  Thank you, Star! Once again, you’ve made me smile from ear to ear!

The Buffalo Check Christmas Runner pattern is available on my Etsy Shop in PDF format, and I’ve listed fabric requirements below.

  1. What a great pattern, I enjoyed making this runner and did not have it completed long before my daughter-in-law fell in love with it, so I was pleased to pass it over to her. Thank you for adding reminders throughout the instructions, following each step is an absolute must. I can't wait to make a full size Buffalo Check quilt.

  2. I am just getting started on this table runner for my daughter-in-law. Out of all the Christmas table runners we looked at (seemed like hundreds!), we picked yours to make. I am also pleased that I can use some of my scraps. I did buy the Moda White, Light and Dark. I will let you know how it turns out. I am excited to get started!!

    1. Thanks so much Kay! That’s so nice to hear. It’s a fun make and I am happy too you can use up treasured scraps!
