Starry Way blocks shine with Woodland Winter

Hello quilting friends!  I’m popping in today to share progress on my latest project, a Starry Way table runner! Last week I posted about the Starry Way kits I created using Deb Strain’s new Woodland Winter collection. I held one kit back for myself and found a spare evening to stitch up a few blocks. Here’s a peek at my progress.

Starry Way is a charm pack pattern that encourages you to take notice of the details in your fabric. My instructions will ask you to separate 33 of the charm squares into three groups of 11. From these groups you will cut the pieces required for the log cabin blocks and the “twinkles” in the star blocks. The fun part is that you have some wiggle room. (You’ll know what I mean once you get started.) Basically, because you are not using every inch of every charm square, you can be a little fussy with your cutting!  This allowed me to focus on some special spots in the fabric, like little birds or a pinecone or an owl. You will also have some left over charm squares (those not part of the 33), and this gives you even more flexibility in the cutting!

I hope I’m not tooting my own horn here, but Starry Way gets my creative juices flowing. I love the exercise of pairing prints and colors together, as well as the opportunity to showcase details in the fabric design. So often when I’m cutting fabric for a project, it becomes a little monotonous. But Starry Way forces me to slow down and enjoy the process. We should probably all do more of that!

You may remember that I recently made a patriotic version of Starry Way, in which I sewed from my stash rather than a charm pack.  Note to self . . . I need to get that quilted before my country’s Independence Day holiday arrives!

Here is a photo of my original Starry Way, which I created using the Juniper Berry collection by Basic Grey. As you can see in this closeup picture, the details in the prints really shine in these blocks!

I have a few Starry Way ~ Woodland Winter kits available in my Etsy shop. The kit includes my paper pattern and all the fabric you need, even the backing!  Starry Way finishes at 40″ x 20.”  If you are just interested in the pattern, it is also available on my Etsy shop in PDF format. Everything in my Etsy shop is on sale now through June 30.

I know that most of us are enjoying summertime pursuits, but on that rainy day or too darn hot and humid day, it’s okay to get carried away quilting! I hope you’ll consider making Starry Way one of your projects.
