Cheerful granny square blanket

Hello friends! I’m back with more crochet adventures! Just in case any of you want to scold me for not focusing on my quilting WIPs (which I discussed a couple weeks ago), I want you to know that I have been diligently working on those projects a little bit each evening. But when I’m travelling with the hubby or we’re nestled in our comfy chairs watching TV, my crochet hooks are busy! My newest project is a very cheerful, multi-colored granny square blanket!

I have been so inspired by a crocheter in the United Kingdom: Fiona McIvor of Sew Happy Creative. Fiona designs crochet patterns, dyes yarn and makes the most beautiful, vibrant projects. (You can also follow her on Instagram and Facebook.) Following Fiona’s lead, I decided to put my own supply of pretty Scheepjes yarn to good use and make a cheerful granny square blanket. In this photo you can see all of the specific color names I’m using.  (They are all Stone Washed Sport Weight.) My hook of choice for this project is a Clover Amour G 4.0mm.

I also added a variegated yarn from Scheepjes called Stone Washed Minerals Rhodonite Radiance also in sport weight. You can see it in the next photo – the white skein with bits of pink and a hint of pale yellow.  I used that yarn in round eleven. (See where the crochet hook is pointing in this progress shot.) Round 11 radiates from pale yellow to white to varying shades of pink. That was pretty risky for me, a girl who really likes to keep things in order.  But I like the eclectic touch it adds and I’m proud of myself for coloring outside of the lines!

I’m not sure how big I will make this blanket. I plan to keep going until it feels like a nice size. In the meantime, I will continue to add rows and pester my husband with the occasional question, “Isn’t this too cute?”  To which he will nod and confirm how darling it is.  He is a keeper!

Once you get the hang of it, crochet is so much fun. Granny Squares are fairly easy to make, and depending on the yarn and colors you use, you can be really creative. If you enjoy handwork, I encourage you to give it a try.  Thanks for stopping by!

  1. So pretty. I bought yarn and hook but cannot seem to get the granny square. Guess I should stick to quilting! Love seeing your creations

  2. Love your colors!!! So beautiful! I, too, am a crocheter. You’re work is so perfect! I would say your more than a novice. Just a quick question. What is the purpose of the yarn on clothespins? Is is just for color reference, or is there another reason. Love the idea!
