Inspiration can strike at the oddest moments. Last weekend as I was vacuuming in our guest room, I was struck by a feeling of gratitude . . . that I have a nice, warm home and people in my life who will come to stay awhile. As I looked at the quilts in my guest room, the feeling of gratitude extended to thoughts of my hobbies and the joy and friendships they bring me. Somehow gratitude and inspiration joined forces, and I thought, “I need to crochet a pretty pillow for the guest room.” Using my Star Watch quilt as the color inspiration, I laid out some yarn and hatched a plan.
I decided to crochet a pillow featuring Sunburst squares. (Last fall I made a pincushion for a friend using this motif, and it was a lot of fun.) I used Erica Arndt’s YouTube Tutorial for the Sunburst Granny Square. Erica is a great teacher. She explains things thoroughly and has a cheerful energy. I still consider myself a novice at crochet, and while I am beginning to understand the hieroglyphics on a crochet pattern, I still lean heavily on tutorials. And I am very slow. This first square took me an hour.
By the end of this week, I had completed three whole Sunburst Granny Squares, and I’m pretty pleased with how they look. I don’t mind my slower pace with crochet; I enjoy yarning over in the evening while I spend time with my husband. Another blessing that this hobby affords!
Once again, I’ve used Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn in sport weight. Here are my color choices: Moon Stone, Canada Jade, Sodalite and Axinite. I haven’t been able to find Scheepjes yarn at a store near me, so I typically order from Jimmy Beans Wool. The navy blue Sodalite color is one of Scheepjes’ new 2025 releases. I can already tell it’s going to be a favorite of mine.
This weekend I hope to complete my Birmingham Special quilt top. It’s coming together so nicely. I hope you all are well and feeling blessed by your own handiwork and projects! Thank you for stopping by!
P.S. I did eventually finish vacuuming the guest room!
