Floating Squares} A fun, free pattern

Are you looking for a quick and easy pattern to feature some of your favorite fat quarters? Please consider my free pattern: Floating Squares! I’m working on my second version of this quilt, this time using pastel pinks and soft taupes. I tell you, these fabrics have me gushing over here!

Floating Squares is my take on a traditional economy block pattern. The pattern is beginner friendly and includes lots of tips to ensure success. But whether you are a new or experienced quilter, I think you will enjoy this pattern. It comes together quickly and really allows your fabrics to shine!

Floating Squares calls for 21 fat quarters. My “inspiration fat quarters” are the pinks and whites from Brenda Riddle’s upcoming Memory Lane collection, which is scheduled to hit stores in July of 2025. After pulling my favorites from Brenda’s upcoming collection, I added in pinks and taupes from past collections by 3 Sisters, Brenda Riddle, Bunny Hill Designs and Tilda.  Here’s a shot of my fat quarters before I cut into them.  Isn’t this a dreamy batch?

I made my original Floating Squares quilt using the beautiful “Shoreline” collection (Camille Roskelley for Moda). I gave this quilt to my mom, as she decorates her cabin living spaces in blues and neutrals.

I hope you will check out this blog post, as it provides a detailed explanation of why this pattern is so great for beginners and seasoned quilter’s alike: Free Pattern: Floating Squares.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope you enjoy Floating Squares!

  1. I made this quilt last year using Tilda’s Summer collection, which was “the blue” collection. It was quick and fun to put together and is now one of my favorite quilts! I look forward to making another quilt using this pattern again. Thanks for sharing your talents!

    1. Oh I bet it looks awesome in those Tilda blues!! I love those too. I’m so glad you liked the pattern!

    1. You are right about that! A great baby pattern option by just using a few fat quarters instead of the 21! 🙂

  2. I love the floating squares design and the lovely colours you
    chose thanks for sharing cheers

  3. I often look at quilt patterns, with can I straight line quilt this and it look amazing or do I need to send off to be longarmed! This is a great pattern I could do myself!
