Granny square Christmas stocking

Hello quilting friends! What projects have you been working on after the holidays? Every year I have a hard time letting go of Christmas; I find myself working on seasonal projects well into January and February. This year is no different. I finished my Christmas version of the Chamomile quilt on December 31. Two weeks into January I finished a crocheted granny square Christmas stocking! It turned out so cute, and I can’t wait to hang it up in my sewing room next year!

I began crocheting granny squares in pink, red and green just before Christmas simply because I was in the mood. I used some of my favorite Scheepjes stonewashed yarn in the colors Canada Jade, Moonstone and Rose Quartz.  I also used a scarlet-colored Yarn Bee Yarntopia yarn from Hobby Lobby.

I wasn’t sure what would become of those cute squares, until I remembered a YouTube tutorial I had seen by MJ’s Off the Hook, aptly named the Granny Square Christmas Stocking. I still consider myself a beginner with crochet, and I could have let this project intimidate me, especially the ribbed band at the top. But MJ’s tutorials are always terrific, and this turned out to be much easier than I thought. MJ has some darling tutorials for cotton dishcloths. I hope to make up some for Easter gifts. I have heard good things about Dishie 100% cotton yarn from Knit Picks. I plan to order some and will keep you posted on that!

I even ordered a Clover Pom Pom maker (size large) so I could add cute embellishments. That was a lot of fun! MJ has several Christmas stocking tutorials. Sometimes she adds tassels and sometimes pom poms. She often adds wooden beads. I happened to have a jute string of wooden beads as a decoration in my house. I just cut the string short and stole a couple of beads for my project.

My crochet hook of choice was a Clover Amour G 4.0mm for the granny squares and a 4.5 for the ribbed band.  (MJ recommended going up a hook size for the band.)

Friends, if you’ve been contemplating getting into crochet, I highly recommend it. I find it to be very soothing. It’s a super hobby to take along in the car or work on in the evenings when you are watching TV. And then of course, there’s the added bonus of collecting yarn, crochet notions and doo dads like pom pom makers. Just so much fun!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you’ll get carried away crocheting real soon!
