Granny squares and the Olympics

This coming May will mark two years since I crocheted my first granny square. Since then, I’ve tried my hand at numerous projects – pin cushions, pillows, blankets, ornaments and Christmas stockings. (Just type “crochet” into the search bar of my blog and you’ll find many of my happy makes.) Big or small, easy or complicated, crocheting brings a creative joy to my heart. If just one of my quilting friends considers picking up a crochet hook because of something I’ve shared on my blog, then I will be doubly happy! On that note, here are a few of my recent granny squares that have me a little giddy.

One snowy weekend at the end of January, I didn’t feel like heading down to my sewing room, but I wanted to keep my hands busy. I grabbed a few skeins of my favorite Scheepjes Stone Washed yarns and whipped up these two cuties. The round granny square is a Granny Circle with lacey edge designed by Lori Holt. The square one is a Daisy Granny Square designed by Erica Arndt. I used the colors Pink Quartzite, Yellow Jasper and Rose Quartz. I don’t have a plan for these yet, but just looking at them inspires me to make more!

When the Olympics rolled around, I set a whole basket of Scheepjes sport weight yarns on my living room sofa so that I could “yarn over and cheer” to my heart’s content! My husband and I both enjoy watching the athletes strive to do their best, and we particularly enjoy the human-interest stories, as I’m sure you all do. Beyond the “thrill of victory / agony of defeat” aspect, the Olympics remind us of how much we all have in common, and of how much goodness there is in the world.  On one of the first nights of the games, I made another Erica Arndt Daisy Granny Square, this time in the colors Yellow Jasper, Rose Quartz and Mekong. (The hot pink is Mekong, which is a Scheepjes River Washed, not Stone Washed.  Sadly, I believe River Washed may be discontinued.)

This past weekend, I continued working on those daisy granny squares, and I’m planning to make a zipped pouch! I have a darling Lori Holt Happy Zipper in the coral color, which matches my yarn so nicely.  (Stay tuned for that project.) And of course my work could not be completed without a handy dandy needle minder.  This cutie is from My Sew Quilty Life’s Sunbonnet collection, and it’s my favorite!

Finally, whenever I have a free moment in the car or while watching TV, I have been making solid granny squares with a denim/navy border. I think I might put these together into a shoulder bag. If you can’t tell, I adore Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn. It has a sort of heathered/halo effect that I find so charming.  The yarn is also high quality, knot free and has a gorgeous range of colors to choose from!

This evening I’ll be in my happy place, cheering on athletes from across the globe while I perform my own little feats of victory, one crochet stitch at a time! Will any of you join me?

  1. Your crochet is so sweet! I love everything you’ve made! Granny squares are fun but I greatly dislike sewing them together. If you have found a way to join the squares that looks great and works well please pass on any tips 🙂 I typically crochet each night during winter while watching TV. It’s so relaxing! I do need to check out that sheepjes yarn. Love the colors and wash!

    1. Hi Suzy! I hear so many people say that they hate sewing them together. I don’t really mind that part for some odd reason. It just reminds me of sewing quilt blocks together and the “hooray we’re getting close” feeling that brings. I have tried a couple of methods, but my favorite is just a single crochet on the back side, but only into the back loops. It makes kind of an open edge on the front. Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts! I love having crochet pals!
