A chunky, daisy granny square pillow

A few weeks ago, I shared pictures of zipped pouches I crocheted with my favorite Scheepjes Stone Washed yarns, in both sport weight and their brand new XXL (super chunky) weight. My crochet hooks have continued to stay busy with Scheepjes yarn, and I’m excited to share a couple of projects with you. First up, a daisy pillow for spring!

This cute, chunky pillow was made using four colors from Scheepjes Stone Washed XXL: Moonstone, Pink Quartzite, Axinite, and Boulder Opal. I used a 6mm Clover Amour hook and began by crocheting a simple daisy (tutorial by Erica Arndt), surrounded by several rounds of granny stitches. I stopped when it measured about 14” square.

For the back side of the pillow, I crocheted four additional daisy squares, joined them with a single crochet (back side), and then bordered them with a few rounds of granny stitches, until it measured about 14” square.

Next, I joined the pillow front to the pillow back (wrong sides together) and did a single crochet around three sides. I inserted a pillow form between the front and back and closed up the pillow by continuing the single crochet along the fourth side. I continue to rely on those who share their knowledge and ideas on YouTube. Those videos have been a blessing to me! Today I want to thank Hooked by Robin for her terrific Bobble Stitch border tutorial, which I used to embellish my daisy pillow. Note: Robin’s sample showed five stitches between each bobble, but I worked three stitches between each bobble. I figured the more bobbles, the better!

Because I considered the single daisy as my pillow front and worked the bobble stitch from that side, the bobbles naturally lean toward the front.  But it still looks darn cute on the back side.

I thought you might be interested in knowing how identical granny squares measure up when crocheted with sport weight versus XXL.  As you can see, my daisy square made with XXL measures roughly 4 3/4” square, while my daisy square made with sport weight measures about 3” square. I enjoy using both weights.

Another crochet expert that I follow on Instagram and YouTube is Sandra of Cherry Heart. Sandra is a prolific crocheter who has an eye for beautiful color combinations. Her teaching tutorials and her podcasts are so fun and inspiring! I came across her tutorial for a Rosie Posie Granny Square using Scheepjes Stone Washed sport weight yarns in pinks and greens, and I was hooked!  While I very much wanted to copy her color combinations exactly, I decided to let one of my quilts inspire my color choices. Leaning into the colors on my Lollygag table topper, I selected Moonstone, Boulder Opal, Axinite, Beryl and Amazonite and whipped up two squares. Aren’t these colors soothing?

Here’s a full picture of my Lollygag table topper, which I made last year as part of the Fat Quarter Shop quilt tour for their Jolly Bar Vol. 5 book. The fabric that you see is Honeybloom by 3 Sisters for Moda. I pretty much love everything 3 Sisters, but Honeybloom will go down as one of my favorites. Now the question is, what shall I do with my cute Rosie Posie granny squares?  Maybe I will make them into mini pillows and tuck them into my tablescape display.  Do you have other ideas for me?

Thanks for stopping by and allowing me to go on and on about this new hobby that I love.  For my next post, I will focus on quilting and share my finished “Next Up” quilt in pinks and taupes! I just need to get that pesky binding finished. Bind a bit, crochet a bit, bind a bit. The story of my life!

    1. Thank you Shawn! I hope you give it a whirl. I enjoy it so much! My first few attempts were challenging, but eventually I got the hang of it and I know you would too!
