Crochet a zipped pouch with Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn

Since I began my crochet journey in 2024, Instagram has been my biggest source of inspiration for “want to make” projects. There are so many talented crocheters on Instagram, from all over the world, who joyfully inspire others with their beautiful creations. From the get-go, I have been drawn to projects made with Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn, which is known for its rich colors and unique heathered look.

Scheepjes is a 165-year-old company based in the Netherlands. My ancestry is mostly Scandinavian, with one set of great-great grandparents who were Dutch, and for some reason it makes me so happy to know that one of my favorite yarns is spun in a land where my ancestors lived. Maybe someday I will get to visit!

Today I’m sharing some springtime eye candy with you: my Cheerful Granny Square blanket from last year along with two zipped pouches I finished last weekend. All of these projects were made with Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn, but one of them was made using a brand-new weight in the Stone Washed line-up: the super chunky XXL!

Over the past two years, I’ve crocheted several projects with the sport weight Stone Washed yarn. Recently, I was blessed to receive some skeins of the new XXL yarn. How exciting! This special delivery from the Scheepjes folks arrived on my doorstep not long after a winter storm. It was a welcome sight amid all the snow!

While the granny square blanket and daisy pouch pictured below were made with the sport weight yarn, I broke into my first skein of the super chunky XXL variety to make the moss stitch pouch. I chose a variegated yarn called Beryl Blaze from the Stone Washed Minerals XXL collection (color #914). Using a 6.00 mm Clover Amour hook, I crocheted a simple rectangle. Then I folded that rectangle in half and fashioned it into a zipped pouch which will be excellent for storing quilting notions like my rotary cutter and smaller rulers. The finished pouch is 11″ wide by 5 ½” tall, and I used almost the entire skein of Beryl Blaze. The moss stitch is so dense that I didn’t even line the pouch with fabric. Nothing will slip through any stitch spaces, and it’s lovely to see the yarn on the inside of the bag as well!

The smaller pouch is made from four daisy granny squares I crocheted in February while watching the Olympics.  I followed a terrific tutorial from Erica Arndt for joining them together to create a fabric-lined, zipped pouch. The daisy pouch finished at 8 ½” wide by 4” tall. For this project I used the sport weight yarn and a 4.00 mm Clover Amour hook. (Color choices and more details here.) For both pouches I used a 16” Happy Zipper by Lori Holt. These double pull zippers have nice chrome pulls and come in several pretty colors.

The moss stitch pouch was pretty enough on its own with its gorgeous range of colors in the variegated thread.  Still, I thought a pop of solid color would be nice, so I added a dimensional flower. I crocheted that little cutie thanks to a YouTube tutorial by Elyse Crochets. The flower was made using the Stone Washed XXL in the color Amazonite and a 6.00 mm Clover Amour hook.

Scheepjes yarn has a wool look, but it is a combination of cotton and acrylic. As someone who is allergic to wool, I’m thankful that I can still get that awesome fuzzy/woolen look without the itching and watery eyes! I haven’t been able to find Scheepjes yarn at any of my local shops, so I order most of my Scheepjes from Jimmy Beans Wool. They carry a large variety of Scheepjes yarns, and I’m hopeful that soon they will start carrying the new XXL. It’s nice to have a chunkier version of my favorite yarn – projects work up more quickly!

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today. I thoroughly enjoyed making these projects, and the pretty yarn put a spring in my late winter step!

Listed below are links to products and tutorials that I used for my projects. Many thanks to the kind folks at Scheepjes who sponsored some yarn for my use.  I will continue to put the XXL skeins to happy use!
