Coffee Time Quilt for Christmas

Hello quilting friends! I’m back with another seasonal Coffee Time Quilt for you. This time I’ve made a Christmas version in the beautiful Midnight Clear collection by 3 Sisters for Moda Fabrics.

Once again, the nice folks at Lou Lou’s Fabric Shop have fabric kits prepared to go with my free tutorial. The Halloween Coffee Time Quilt kits we introduced in September sold out in just a couple of days, so you may want to head over to Lou Lou’s quickly!

The Midnight Clear collection includes rich traditional Christmas colors and details. For our Coffee Time Quilt, we chose the sophisticated crimson script to be the main fabric. This tone-on-tone print includes the titles of many of our favorite Christmas hymns. It is gorgeous and frames all of the mini charm squares so nicely.

My initial idea was to use a matching crimson thread for my simple straight line quilting, but then I spied a spool of Aurifil 2340 50 wt in my thread basket.  I loved the warmth it added and how it pulled out the soft browns found in the pine cones and birds. The name of Aurifil 2340 is Cafe au Lait, which means coffee with milk. What a perfect thread for my Coffee Time Quilt!

I’ve written before that I enjoy “rescuing” crocheted trim from antique stores and using them in my smaller pieces. However, this month my antique store scavenging fell short.  I did find this really pretty ecru crocheted trim at JoAnn Fabrics and I’m very happy with the results.  In the bottom of Grandma Audrey\’s button jar I found four small wooden buttons. They add a nice, warm finishing touch.

The Coffee Time Quilt is an easy project you can finish in a day. Really, I think you could complete the sewing, quilting, embellishments and binding in a day and even take a couple of breaks to eat!

Turn on the Christmas music, pour yourself a cup of coffee (or hot apple cider if you prefer) and get carried away making your own Coffee Time Quilt for Christmas! Be sure to post your version of this mini quilt on Instagram using this hashtag:  #coffeetimequilt
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

  1. This is so sweet! I'm not a coffee drinker but tea would be the next best thing… with some scones of course!! 🙂 Another lovely little quilt!!

  2. I adore this pattern… I love the Christmas and the Halloween ones… and I am thinking about using for a table center piece, this done in NFL and College Football material… only changing it slightly… using 1/2 of the 4.5 blocks are solid pieces with the school logo on them.. and the other blocks in 4 patch with the school colors… Of course the school that I will be doing the most of is the Ohio State Buckeyes and the material will lend itself to the 4 out of 9 logo squares.

  3. Hi! I purchased this quilt kit from LouLou's fabric and although I haven't made it yet, I did follow your terrific directions and make a \”coffee time\” quilt using Porcelain Blue fabric by Northcott. I made two quilts and I also adapted your \”coffee time quilt\” to make a table runner for our coffee table. So thanks to you, we now have a very homey looking great room….I am excited to try your design again soon (and I will most definitely get the kit made before the holidays next year!) I tried to attach a photo of one of my three pieces to your Facebook page. Thank you for the wonderful idea!

  4. I saw your photo on my FB page! It is brilliant in those blues! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial and found a way to adapt it to work for your room! Happy sewing to you! 🙂

  5. Hello. I just came across your site thru Pinterest and was trying to find the Midnight Clear coffee time quilt instructions but it says page not found. Can you help me please?
