Spelling Bee Sew Along: a finished pillow

Do you remember the blocks I showed you months ago for the Spelling Bee Sew Along with Lori Holt and Fat Quarter Shop?  Well, I finally got my act together and completed the over sized pillow I was imagining in my mind. It feels so good to have this sweet project done, and just in time for my college girl to move home for the summer!

During the Spelling Bee Sew Along, I made the Capital HCapital G and Flower blocks from Lori\’s fabulous book Spelling Bee. My plan all along was to incorporate these blocks into a fun throw pillow for my daughter, Haley Grace. Some day I\’d like to make the complete alphabet quilt from Lori\’s book. The blocks are just too much fun!

I used fabrics from two different collections by Vanessa Goertzen (Lella Boutique for Moda): Farmer\’s Daughter and Olive\’s Flower Market. The pillow looks so fresh and pretty with my original Window Garden quilt, which Haley adopted for her bed.

This throw pillow measures 28\” wide and 15\” tall.  I wanted something generously sized so that I could have a nice wide border framing the blocks. (Luckily, you can find just about any sized pillow form insert imaginable on the internet!)

And because throw pillows will likely get tossed about, the back should be as pretty as the front!  I used one of my favorite pink prints from Olive\’s Flower Market for the envelope backing.

Don\’t you just love this darling quilting pattern? It is called Spring Lei by Anne Bright Designs.  My local long arm quilting friend, Barb of Quilts on Broadway, chose this design and I think it is the perfect whimsical touch. Although it is a lei of flowers, it also reminds me of chunky butterflies . . . a happy thought!

The Spelling Bee Sew Along began in October and runs through August, every Saturday morning!  This cute cover shot should give you an idea of the fun you could have with this book! Purchase a copy today and get started!

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today. It was a joy to be able to share this finished project with you.

OH!  I nearly forgot to mention . . . I am offering FREE SHIPPING on my Etsy shop for the remainder of May 2018. No coupon code needed.  This applies to paper patterns, fabric and kits!  (US only)

  1. oh my gosh-do you every buy ugly fabric?-because you never have ugly projects! and everything i WANT TO MAKE! LOL This is so dang cute and your daughter will love it! My daughter has so many pillows that i've made her you can barely see her queen size bed! She is working on her Master's and doing an internship in Maryland this summer and I think she could use another pillow 🙂

  2. Oh what a hoot! Thanks for the super fun comment! ;)How awesome that your daughter is working toward her masters. I'm sure you are so proud and excited for her. Well, I'm thinking a girl can never have too many pillows . . . and . . . there is just too much non-ugly fabric out there. So go for it! HA!
