Not long ago I saw the cutest projects showing up on social media . . . jelly roll rugs! Well it didn’t take me long to get the itch to make one myself, so I snooped around a bit and discovered that my sponsor, Stitches N Giggles, had all the supplies I needed to get started. Ta-dah . . . here is my first jelly roll rug!
While quilting is my passion (obsession), I have always been a girl that enjoyed any type of arts and crafts project, which is what this jelly roll rug project reminded me of. It was so fun to take a break from quilt making and create something different. I think you would enjoy it too!
Pattern designer Roma Lambson of R.J. Designs deserves the applause for this fun new project. She has come up with two patterns, Jelly Roll Rug (an oval rug) and Jelly Roll Rug 2 (a rectangular rug), and her instructions and diagrams are top notch. Roma takes the time to include many helpful tips to ensure success, which I really appreciate.
I made the Jelly Roll Rug 2, which finishes at 32” x 42”. In addition to her pattern, Roma’s supply list is quite simple: 1 jelly roll consisting of 40-42 strips 2 1/2” x 42”, 1 1/2 yards of 96” wide batting, size 14-18 (sharp/jeans) sewing machine needle and thread! The batting will be cut into 2 1/2” strips to be paired with the jelly roll strips.
But lo and behold, that awesome Lori at Stitches N Giggles has saved us some work. She has a supply of 2 1/2” Katahdin batting on a roll! I ordered this to save myself some time. (Note: for the rectangular rug project, you will need two rolls.) I also found that my Wonder Clips were very helpful for feeding the strips into my machine. Plus they are cute, so that is a bonus!
My rug features a jelly roll of Flower Mill fabric by Corey Yoder for Moda. I have made several projects from this collection. It is so cheerful and the colors are vibrant and wonderful. I’m really hoping my daughter Haley will take this rug to college, along with her Harmony quilt, and use it at her bedside. See how I propped her slippers by the rug . . . just to give her the hint! That poor girl. She probably can’t wait to get back to school.
As I was making my rug, I kept thinking how much fun this would be to do with friends. You could gather up some sewing buddies and have a weekend of rug making and snacking! Doesn\’t that sound like fun?
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today! If you are interested in making one of these cute rugs, please zip on over to Stitches N Giggles for your supplies. Shop owner Lori has the patterns marked down and is also offering a June sale on many other items in store!

This is great and looks so bright and cheerful. It's a project that could use up lots of scraps in a productive new way. I'm wondering if the rugs washable when they get dirty?
This is beautiful! I'm sure your daughter will love it!! Hugs, H
Such a cheerful and beautiful rug!! Just looking at it, would put a smile on your face before the day begins! Haley will have another piece from home if she takes this along :)!
So… IF I were going to cut my own jelly strips and batting… could I increase it all to 4 or 4.5 inches per strip? I am working with some nice bird prints that I would love to show more of the print in each strip. I know that it would take fewer rows and the measurements all need adjusting. But… could it be done and work right? Would the thickness and stitching all still be ok?? Thank you for your help!
I think this would look GREAT scrappy – that is a wonderful idea. I want to make a jelly roll “jig” round one, but this looks a bit easier to tackle. Thx for the idea!
Roma includes washing instructions in her pattern! She suggests washing it in a mesh laundry bag on the gentle cycle!
Thanks so much Helen!
It really is a fun project! I think you'd love it Sigi!
Hi Pam! I sure think you could customize it to other sizes, but I would like to refer you to Roma for those types of questions, as it is her pattern! 🙂
