Summer Moon QAL: May blocks

A few weeks ago I encouraged you to join me in the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. If I didn’t tempt you then, I hope I can tempt you now. I\’ve made the May blocks, and they turned out as cute as buttons, if I do say so myself!

Summer Moon is a sampler quilt designed by Carrie Nelson and It’s Sew Emma (the pattern company of Fat Quarter Shop). The quilt is comprised of 24 blocks that are each made in three different sizes: 5”, 6 1/2” and 8” unfinished, for a total of 72 blocks. The book includes setting instructions for the small and medium blocks so that when the quilt is laid out for final assembly, all blocks are the same size.

In my last blog post, I explained that I will be sewing just three blocks a month (not nine) in the medium 6 1/2\” size. I will end up with a much smaller quilt top, but that\’s okay. I will still experience the fun of this quilt along, and I won\’t feel stressed out. I just have too many other projects on my sewing calendar.

For the month of May, we\’re asked to sew the Album, Churn Dash and Fool\’s Puzzle blocks. The blocks are fun and easy, thanks to the terrific instructions and illustrations in the book. Here are my individual blocks:

Churn Dash

Fool\’s Puzzle

If you would like to join in, you just need to order the Summer Moon book and figure out your fabrics. I\’m sewing from my stash of Lella Boutique and Corey Yoder fabrics. I\’ve included the fabric requirements at the end of this blog post.
When I received my book from Fat Quarter Shop in February, I made one test block, a 6 1/2” Maple Star. That block is on the schedule for the month of September. Guess what that means? I\’m already ahead of schedule. Woo hoo!
The Summer Moon quilt along starts now and run through February 2020. For more information, please visit the Fat Quarter Shop blog: The Jolly Jabber. I hope I’ve tempted you to join us so you can create your own lovely Summer Moon quilt.

  1. I think I need to do this one. I still have some Nest fabric from another project and I also have some wonderful new prints.Your blocks are beautiful!!

  2. Hi Sue. No there isn't. I think you just need to nab yourself and book and get started. Then post your monthly blocks on Instagram or on Facebook. You may want to join Kimberly's Stitch Squad on Facebook. I bet a lot of people will be sharing blocks there! 🙂
