I’m back today with another set of blocks for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. The August block assignment includes three pretty blocks: Twin Star, Split Nine Patch, and Birds in the Air.
I thoroughly enjoyed making the Twin Star block. Fabric selection for this block was a snap. Once I decided to fussy cut a pink flower from Lella Boutique’s Nest collection, all that was left was to select two complementary blush prints for the star points. To add visual interest, I used the pale gray text print from Corey Yoder’s Strawberry Jam collection as my neutral.
For my Split Nine Patch block, I again fussy cut a pink flower from the Nest collection, this time with the robin’s egg blue background. This block reminds me of a piece of candy with twisted wrapper ends, perhaps because I have a super sweet tooth.
Finally, I tackled the Birds in the Air block. You may recall that I am making the medium-sized blocks each month, which finish at 6 1/2”. This block is comprised of 36 little birds, each measuring 1 1/2”. Working with so many small pieces can be challenging. But I took my time, pinned a lot, and pulled out the seam ripper once. Don’t these birds in flight just twinkle?
Summer Moon is a sampler quilt designed by Carrie Nelson and It’s Sew Emma (the pattern company of Fat Quarter Shop). The quilt is comprised of 24 blocks that are each made in three different sizes: 5”, 6 1/2” and 8” unfinished, for a total of 72 blocks. I am making 24 medium sized blocks, and I hope to put them together into a pretty baby quilt. It\’s fun to rummage through this pretty stash of fabrics each month to see what I can create!
The Summer Moon quilt along began in May and runs through February 2020. There is plenty of time for you to join in the fun. Even if you decide not to participate in the quilt along, I highly recommend this book. It is filled to the brim with wonderful blocks and endless possibilities!
