New Pattern: 9-Patch Pivot, a fat quarter quilt

Do you love collecting fat quarters, but then struggle to find just the right pattern to actually use them? Well, I have just the answer . . . my newest pattern, 9-Patch Pivot!
9-Patch Pivot calls for just 21 fat quarters plus 1 1/4 yards of neutral, making fabric selection a snap! My sample features the upcoming Harvest Road collection by Lella Boutique for Moda, which will be available in October. This pretty quilt finishes at 66″ x 77″.
Friends, there are several things you will like about this pattern.  First, it really allows a fabric collection to shine. It’s scrappy and visually interesting, but it has enough continuity to also be visually soothing.
Second, assembly is really quite easy. The pattern calls for sewing stripsets, which are strategically pressed so that you can nest seams for perfect nine-patch blocks.
Third, you may notice that each small nine-patch block is “floating” within the larger finished block, meaning it rests more than 1/4” from all four sides. What’s so great about this? You won’t have to match points when you assemble all of your completed blocks into rows! Woo hoo!
Finally, this pattern will look fabulous in just about any fabric collection. I made a test block in a charming pastel collection by Elea Lutz, called Bluebirds on Roses. Isn’t this darling?  And my mind is already thinking ahead to winter sewing . . . wouldn’t a Christmas version be lovely?
By now you have noticed the glorious machine quilting that ties everything together so wonderfully. This was done by the lovely and talented Starlit Bear of Starlit Quilts. We chose a soft taupe thread and a pattern called Abundant Feathers, which provides additional warmth and texture to the finished quilt. Having Star finish my quilts is always a treat. She has an artist’s eye and always steers me in the right direction! Thank you, Star!

If you have a bundle of fat quarters that just need a pattern, I hope you will consider 9-Patch Pivot. It’s available on my Etsy shop in PDF format.  I think you will really enjoy it!  And if you’d like to make one just like mine, a little birdie told me that LouLou’s Fabric shop is planning to kit this pattern when Harvest Road releases in October. I’ll keep you posted on that!
Thanks for stopping by, quilting friends!

  1. I was wondering what the fabric is with the cherries in circles. It’s in the background of the block with the Elea Lutz Fabric. Love the block.

    1. Hi Debbie! Oh boy I’m sorry. I see that little piece you are talking about it the background of the picture, and I think it’s an Elea Lutz print, but it could also be a Lori Holt print. I know it’s over 5 years old, so I really can’t remember anymore. I’m sorry!
