Summer Moon QAL: September blocks

I’m cruising right along with my blocks for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. The September block assignment includes three darling blocks: Maple Star, Patchwork Big O, and Southern Star. All three blocks feature the Nest collection by Lella Boutique for Moda.

My homework for this month was a bit lighter, as I had already made the Maple Star block months ago when I first received the book. This is still one of my favorite blocks. Any block that lends itself to a fussy-cut center is aces in my book!

The Patchwork Big O block was a bit tricky, and on my first try I had to pull out the seam ripper. But with a patience and close attention to the pattern instructions, I got it right the second time.

The Southern Star block may look difficult, but it isn’t. This pretty block is just comprised of half-square triangles. The pattern calls for four different prints to make the eight star points, but I opted to use three prints and repeated the green.  I think it has a nice effect.

Summer Moon is a sampler quilt designed by Carrie Nelson and It’s Sew Emma (the pattern company of Fat Quarter Shop). The quilt is comprised of 24 blocks that are each made in three different sizes: 5”, 6 1/2” and 8” unfinished, for a total of 72 blocks. I am making 24 medium sized blocks, so in the end I will have a smaller quilt. It’s been a creative joy to rifle through my fabric basket each month to create my blocks.

The Summer Moon quilt along began in May and runs through February 2020. You honestly can jump in at any time.  If you are on Instagram, there are plenty of people sewing along and sharing photos of their monthly creations. It’s “sew” inspiring!
Thanks for stopping by to see my progress.

  1. Hi Taunja, In the photo of the Big O block I noticed how perfect your stripes line up between all the striped pieces. I love to see that kind of detail when cutting and piecing. You always do such beautiful work. Bernadine
