A granny square pin cushion

It’s been a couple months since I crocheted my first ever granny square and was promptly bitten by the crochet bug. Yes, indeed . . . I am still loving this new hobby! Here are my two most recent makes: a daisy granny square and a granny square pin cushion. Pardon my horn tooting, but aren’t they cute?

I’ve started following some creative ladies on Instagram and YouTube in my search for tutorials that will help me grow and learn crochet. I am so thankful for these women who give of their time and talents by providing instructional videos for true beginners . . . those of us who need every yarn over, every stitch and every movement explained. I made my daisy granny square while watching an excellent tutorial by Marie Walsoe of Adore Crea. She has such a calm and thoughtful way of explaining each step.  I’ve seen these daisy granny squares made into sweaters, pillows and blankets.  I plan to just admire mine for now, but some day I will make more. They are so cheerful!

Since I am a quilter, I decided to transform two of my recent pink and taupe granny squares into a pin cushion.  Five years ago, Fat Quarter Shop posted a wonderful tutorial on their YouTube page called “How to Make a Crochet Pincushion with Lori Holt.”  It’s a timeless tutorial, and Lori Holt is a fabulous teacher. My YouTube playlist labeled “Crochet” is getting pretty full, what with all of the cool projects I am finding through the wonders of the internet. For both projects, I used Scheepjes Stone Washed sport weight yarn in the colors shown on my yarn pegs.

Quilting will always be my first love, but I am truly enjoying crochet.  It is so satisfying to create something sweet with my hands from the comfort of my living room or back yard. I don’t always feel like heading to the sewing room in the evenings, particularly in the summer. But after a long day’s work, I still often want to do something creative. Whipping up a cute little granny square is just the ticket. I hope you’ll consider giving it a try!

Thanks for stopping by, quilting friends!

  1. I have decided to relearn crochet after 50 years! , Taunja, I am a quilter too and look for something creative to do with my hands in the evenings. I’m 84 and a retired RN. I learned crochet back in the 60s or 70s and enjoyed it. You have inspired me!

    1. That is so great to hear Karen! I bet you will love it as I do. There are so many awesome tutorials on YouTube. I’m so thankful for that! My best to you. Keep me posted!
