Crocheted pumpkins!

This summer, every weekend has been jam-packed with activities for our family. Weekends at the lake, bridal showers and time spent with family and friends were the highlights. Weekends we spent staining the deck and doing home improvement projects weren’t as fun, but they were satisfying. This past weekend I told my husband I didn’t want to go anywhere, and I didn’t want to have any visitors. I wanted to park my you-know-what on the sofa and watch the Olympics, catch up on some hand binding, and enjoy a little crochet. That’s exactly what I did, and I even have a cute finish to share with you . . . crocheted pumpkins!

I want to give a virtual hug to Erica Arndt for her terrific Crochet Pumpkins pattern and accompanying YouTube tutorial! Even though I’m a novice at crochet, this project was quite easy and manageable thanks to Erica’s detailed and thoughtful presentation. (She takes the time to zoom in and explain exactly which loop you are supposed to poke your hook through and which one you aren’t. . . just what this girl needs.) I was so tickled when I finished this cute trio of pumpkins that I felt like a gold medalist myself! Thanks again, Erica!

Learning to crochet has put a creative spring in my step and has increased my sewjo. I love pondering ways my quilts and crochet projects can complement each other. As I mentioned in my last blog post, I won’t start decorating for autumn until after Labor Day (well . . . maybe I’ll start on Labor Day weekend), but I did photograph my pumpkins with my new autumn table topper just to increase the fall feels. I did some simple straight-line quilting on that piece and now I can add it to my binding-while-watching-Olympics stack!

Here are the products I used in case this helps you on your crochet journey: Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick yarn in the colors Wisteria, Whipped Cream and Squash, as well as a Clover Amour Crochet Hook (M/N 9.0 mm)

My daughter and one of my friends have already asked me to crochet pumpkins for them.  Do you think I should oblige, or should I make them learn how to crochet so that I can have crochet buddies? Maybe I’ll do both!

  1. Love the pumpkins. I wish I could crochet I just can’t seem to get it. Are the pumpkins all yarn or are they stuffed with batting? You are so talented, thank you for sharing your talents. I look forward to all your posts

    1. Hi Shawn! I was the same. I tried a few years ago and just could not get the hang of it. But this time around, following YouTube tutorials from Lori Holt and Erica Arndt, somehow it has clicked. They are very beginner focused! Yep, the pumpkins are filled with batting / fiber fill. Thanks for your kind note!
