Pink Patchwork Christmas quilt completed!

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in today to share pictures of my finished Pink Patchwork Christmas quilt. I’m thrilled with how this quilt turned out: the color scheme, the chipper Santas, the pretty machine quilting . . . it all makes me smile!

I realize pink is not everyone’s favorite color, and some folks would argue it’s definitely not a Christmas color. But there is a tender sweetness about this quilt that tugs at my holiday heartstrings. In fact, it might go down as one of my favorite makes. I’m trying to put my finger on why that is, and I think this list sums it up:

  • Delectable shades of pink and pinky-red, even when they don’t match, play so nicely together.
  • Spunky Santas and darling mice remind me of favorite “Golden Book” stories from my childhood.
  • An array of stripes and checks offer both visual interest and overall cohesion.
  • Collecting fabrics from several different designers (and at least three different fabric companies) provides an artistic challenge.

In this picture, I hope you can see the darling machine quilting. Katy at Woods Edge Quilting used a panto called Twist Tie. Doesn’t it have a nice retro vibe? You’ll also notice that my quilt has a scrappy backing.  I didn’t have quite enough of the white (with mice) and pink (with smaller Santa faces) to piece a backing. I was a few inches shy.  So I rummaged through my Christmas fabrics and found a green Lella Boutique text print which I used as a horizontal band, joining the other two prints. I love it when the back is almost as cute as the front!

I also brought out the crochet hook because every sweet Christmas quilt needs a candy-colored granny square pillow! My yarn of choice was Scheepjes Stonewashed (sport weight) in the colors Moon Stone, Rose Quartz, Carnelian, New Jade and Canada Jade. My crochet hook of choice was a Clover Amour hook, size G 4.0mm.

As I mentioned in my November 5 post, my quilt top finished at 55 ½” wide by 66 ½” tall.  I cut my squares 6” x 6” and ended up with 120 squares, enough for 12 rows with 10 in each row.  (I chose 6” squares because I had a sweet panel from the “Twas” collection by Jill Howarth for Riley Blake Designs.  The Santa squares in that panel were 6”. )

It may be difficult to find the “Twas” fabric, as it came out more than a year ago. (If you scour the internet, you may be able to get your hands on some.)  Otherwise, you could always search Etsy or other online stores using search terms link “pink Santa fabric” or “pink Christmas fabric” or “pastel holiday fabric” or “retro Santa fabric” or “vintage themed Christmas fabric”.

I hope this blog post inspires you to make a simple patchwork quilt from fabrics that tug at your holiday heartstrings. Go on, get carried away quilting! You deserve it!

  1. I think pink is perfect for Christmas! My grandmother decorated her flocked Christmas trees 60 years ago in pink with lovely glass bead garland and ornaments. I’m making pink Christmas tree blocks this week as I reminisce about her lovely trees.

    1. Oh I am picturing it in my mind! I bet it was wonderful! I love that some of that style is coming back. I’ve seen some really pretty glass ornaments in pastel colors on the shelves. They are just lovely! Would love to see your pink tree blocks!!

  2. Love this quilt! Could definitely see this on a little girls bed during the Christmas season. I envy your ability to pull fabrics that really work together from different designers let alone fabric companies. So cute!

    1. Thanks for your kind words Wendy! Honestly, I just hem and haw with the fabric until I get happy with it! And sometimes I just have to “let go” but that’s hard for me to do. I guess we all need to do that to a certain extent! Just let go and have fun with it!

  3. I’m definitely in the “NO PINK FOR CHRISTMAS” camp (no black, either), but I think your quilt is absolutely adorable. It’s soft and sweet, and I can see my #5 grandchild loving it completely! And, you’re right: although the pinks don’t match, they play nicely together. If only people could do the same!

    1. That’s so funny that you say that, Lori, because I was actually thinking that as I typed it. If only we could all play as nicely together as fabrics can! 😉

  4. What a beautiful blend of fabrics and I can see why it tugs at your heartstrings, Taunja!
I don’t mind the pink at all, in fact I love it!

    1. Thanks so much Sigi! Wish we weren’t so many miles apart so we could meet in person and have show-and-tells in person. Wouldn’t that be fun? 🙂

  5. I’m definitely in team pink for Christmas. The quilt is fun. Your crocheted pillow that coordinates was the show stopper for me. Beautiful, both of them. Merry Christmas!!

  6. I’m about to finish up a Christmas themed table runner for myself using your Starry Stockings pattern. There’s pink in it too! 🙂 It’s fun to change thing up a bit by just adding a different color somewhere along the line, isn’t it.

  7. I love your pink Christmas patchwork quilt!! So cute with the Santa’s and mice! I’m partial to pink so it definitely caught my eye 🙂

  8. I absolutely love ❤️ this quilt!!! I love vintage Christmas and you definitely captured it in this quilt!!! I love the pink fabrics too 😊

    1. Thanks Kim! I’m getting hooked on vintage Christmas too . . . I’m trying to keep it reigned into my sewing area though, so my husband doesn’t give me any “looks”. ha ha!

  9. I used to be very traditional in my choices for Christmas fabrics. Red and green only. I have since become an ardent pink for Christmas fan! I even bought pink Christmas wrapping paper and a pink Santa mug for myself. Your quilt is so pretty!

    1. Pink is a relatively new Christmas color for me too, and it’s fun. I’m so glad you bought a pink Santa mug for yourself . . . because I recently did too! He is too darn cute! I’m glad to know I’m not the only one going over the top. 😉

  10. I too am a big fan of pink for Christmas. I made a large Christmas quilt using Sweetfire road which is based on pinks. It is at the long armer. With the scraps I’m making a robin Pickens wreath pattern for my niece. She is a fellow pink fan. Happy holidays.

    1. Oh your lucky niece!! How fun. I’ve seen Sweetfire Road’s Christmas collection on social media and it looked so pretty! Sadly I didn’t get to see it in person. (Or maybe “thankfully” is the word – for my pocket book anyway!)

  11. This is stunning. I found Once Upon a Time Christmas by Sweetfire Road this season! I was finally able to have pink, red & white Christmas decor! I can’t wait to make your beautiful quilt!
