Cheerful granny square blanket is finished!

Hello friends! I’m popping in today to share a happy crochet moment with you . . . my cheerful granny square blanket is complete! From start to finish, this project was a joy for me to make. Both on the blog and on my socials, you encouraged my progress each step of the way. Thank you for that!

Back in February, I began working on this blanket after being inspired by Fiona of Sew Happy Creative. Fiona’s projects always cause me to stop and stare. Whether she is making a blanket, a pouch or a sweater for her grandbaby, she uses the most vibrant color combinations. Fiona’s work was my inspiration, and here is a photo from February showing my early progress.

In March I continued my work, adding one round every evening while my husband and I watched TV together. I was tickled at how cute this blanket looked next to some new fabric I had purchased in the spring ~ Erica Arndt’s limited collection called Sew Quilty.  I think I should make a granny square quilt to go with my cheerful granny square blanket!

Later in March, I hatched a plan to add a border of smaller granny squares surrounding my larger granny square center.  I was quite giddy when I found that my plan worked, and I shared a blog post AND confession with you . . . I did a happy dance around the living room when the granny square border plan worked!

In April, I continued adding rounds to the outer edge of my blanket. Someone asked me if I had a prescribed order of colors that I followed.  I didn’t. I just added whichever color looked best to me at the moment.

Now it is June and the blanket is complete and oh so cheerful! Recently I added a shell scalloped edge to a Sunburst Granny Square pillow, and I was amazed at how easy it was.  I decided that same edging would be the perfect finishing touch on my cheerful granny square blanket! If you’d like to give this a try, I followed a YouTube tutorial by Hooked by Robin.

My crochet journey began about a year ago, and I’m so glad I decided to try something new. I don’t foresee that I’ll ever be as confident or prolific with crochet as I am with quilting, but that is totally fine. Crochet has forced me to slow down and enjoy the process, which is something we all sorely need in this fast-paced world of ours. My encouragement to you is to pick up a crochet hook and give it a whirl!

Have a great week! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. Hi Taunja – This afghan is the most beautiful one I have ever seen. I love granny squares and have made granny square afghans many time but nothing comes close to your beautiful project. It is hard to believe that you have been crocheting for such a short time as you are a natural. How many skeins of each color of yarn did you use – I am guessing more than one skein?? You are a natural when it comes to crochet – can’t wait to see what you make next!

    1. Oh thank you Anne! Your comments are just too kind! I am sorry. I didn’t keep track of the amount of yarn I used. I need to get better at documenting that! I will make that a goal for the future! 🙂

  2. Absolutely gorgeous!!! You are so very talented and I really appreciate you sharing with all of us! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

  3. That is a gorgeous blanket! I know you’ll enjoy snuggling up under it for years to come. You are the queen of color combinations!

  4. Glad you finished it! I’ve never done crochet before. Beautiful colors and so pretty!

    1. Ha ha! I’m glad I finished it too!! There were a few evenings that my arm got sore! Thanks so much Linda!

  5. That blanket is awesome! My Gramma taught me the Granny Square, and it’s about the only crochet I know. I wish she could see your blanket!

    1. Thanks Patti! Your sweet comment touched my heart, as I wish both of my grandmas could see my crochet projects too! I wish I would have learned from them!

  6. Your granny square Afghan is absolutely beautiful. Love the scalloped border. Thanks for all the pictures.

    1. Thanks so much Sue! That scallop adds such a nice touch, and it turns out that is so easy! Woo hoo!!

  7. Your eye for color is amazing and I love how you match your crochet projects with your quilting ones. I’m a blue/brown girl so a lot of your projects resonate with me. This afghan screams summer – especially with the darling scalloped border. So inspiring – I haven’t crocheted in years but think I’d better start using the roomful of fabric I have before starting something new! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Oh thank you for your kind words! I can totally relate! I did some sewing room organizing yesterday, and I thought . . . I had better continuing sewing down my stash of fabric AND yarn before I buy one more thing! (We’ll see how that goes!)

  8. Truly a piece of art and such beautiful color selections. You are a master of color in all your quilts and needle work!

  9. This is stunning! Love the colour scheme too. Did you order more than 1 ball of each yarn?
