Summer Moon Quilt Along: Will you join me?

Are you looking for a fun and inspiring quilt along experience? Then join me for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. It begins in May and runs for 10 months, ending in February 2020. When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful quilt top measuring 70 x 78 inches . . . OR, you could be a rebel like me and just sew some of the blocks.

Summer Moon is a sampler quilt designed by Carrie Nelson and It’s Sew Emma (the pattern company of Fat Quarter Shop). The quilt is comprised of 24 blocks that are each made in three different sizes: 5”, 6 1/2” and 8” unfinished, for a total of 72 blocks. The book includes setting instructions for the small and medium blocks so that when the quilt is laid out for final assembly, all blocks are the same size.

The quilt along schedule will ask you to make three blocks (in all three sizes) each month, for a total of nine blocks a month. I will only be making the 6 1/2” blocks, so I will be sewing just three blocks a month. When I’m done, I’ll put my blocks together with some sashing and make a small quilt that could be used as a table topper or baby quilt. I have too many other projects in progress to keep up with the full schedule, but this way I still get to participate in the fun! The block schedule is shown below. For the month of May, we\’ll be making the Album, Churn Dash and Fool\’s Puzzle blocks.

The most important thing you need to do right now is get your Summer Moon book ordered and ponder your fabric choices!  I will be sewing from my stash of Lella Boutique fabrics, predominantly her Nest collection, but also Farmer’s Daughter and Lollipop Garden. To add a touch of sunshine, I’ve decided to include some yellow prints from the Pepper & Flax collection by Corey Yoder. Here’s a photo of my fabric pull.

When I received my book from Fat Quarter Shop in February, I spent several evenings perusing the pretty photos and skimming the instructions. I was so inspired, I made one test block, a 6 1/2” Maple Star, and I was hooked. I think you will be too!

For more information, please visit the Fat Quarter Shop blog: The Jolly Jabber. I’ll share monthly updates here on my blog and also on Facebook and Instagram. I hope I’ve tempted you to join us so you can create your own lovely Summer Moon quilt.

  1. Hmmm . . . I believe maybe you have a web browser setting on your computer that is not allowing that link re-direction. You could go directly to the Fat Quarter Shop website!

  2. I have been looking at the book and had it in and out of my cart thinking if I needed to start something else. It is so pretty and I have A LOT of stash that I can work with. I will think about it again. It is so very, very pretty! Thank you!

  3. I would love to do this, but am currently doing 2 monthly and 1 weekly (this one comes to a close this week) quilt a longs and the 2019 UFO challenge. So glad I'm making progress this year. I know another blogger will be having a summer quilt along that I've participated before with and I'd like to do hers…. I can't wait till i retire in a few years so I can have more time for sewing!! 🙂

  4. Can no longer resist, have ordered the book & am looking through my fabrics as I wait for the book to get here. A question, please – is the background fabric that is suggested and/or that you or others have used the same throughout the quilt? If I'm going to gather up/order 10 yards of background material, I'd like to get this right! Many thanks for sharing your talent & your ideas with all of us.
