Nestled: a whimsical Christmas version

Hello quilting friends! According to the calendar, this past Tuesday marked the first day of spring. But those of us who live in Minnesota aren’t fooled by mere dates on a calendar. It’s still winter here. On Friday morning I woke up to a fresh batch of snow covering everything in sight, and more snow is expected Sunday into Monday.  That seems like the perfect excuse for me to share a Christmas version of my Nestled pattern!

In February, I released my new Nestled pattern, where a primitive style house is surrounded by a simple wreath. Nestled finishes at 22 ½” square, so it could be a wall hanging or a table topper. Here’s a photo of the original.

My Christmas version features a whimsical touch, with fussy-cut characters appearing in the windows of the holiday house. Any time spent fussy cutting is time well spent. It brings the same kind of contentment that I experienced as a child, coloring at the kitchen table or doodling with my spirograph.

Here are the fabrics that I used:

Greens (3) in Wreath: Starberry by Corey Yoder for Moda (releasing in May of 2024)
Red Roof: Moda’s Country Red Essential Dot
Red House: Red Barn Christmas by Sweetwater for Moda
Red Border: Christmas Morning by Lella Boutique for Moda
Window Characters: Twas by Jill Howarth for Riley Blake Designs
Background: Moda Bella Solid 9900 98 White Bleached

The Twas fabric collection was so darling that I ordered several prints for a future project. I photographed a couple of those prints here for you to see.  I love those jolly Santas on a pink background. If you go on Etsy and search Twas by Jill Howart, you may still be able to find some of these cute prints!

Nestled is a great pattern if you are looking for a creative outlet.  The material requirements are minimal.  You may even have enough fabrics in your stash to get started today!

Materials Needed

White………………………………….. 1/3 yard
Dark Green………………………….. 1/8 yard
Medium Green……………………… 1/4 yard
Light Green………………………….. 1/4 yard
Black House…………………………. 1/8 yard
Gray Chimney & Corners……….. 1/8 yard
Outer Border………………………… 1/4 yard
Backing……………………………….. 1 yard
Binding……………………………….. 1/3 yard

When I was taking the photos, I placed that little gingham bow at the top of the wreath.  What do you think? Does that enhance the cuteness factor, or is it just too much? I guess I will decide after it is quilted and I’ve attached the binding. What fun!

Nestled is available as a PDF pattern on my Etsy Shop. I’d love to see what you create. If you are on Instagram, be sure to tag me ( @taunjalynn ) and hashtag your post with #nestledpattern

Thanks for stopping by!

My view yesterday morning, March 22 in Minnesota.  The weatherman is predicting 12-24 inches in the coming few days.  As we say in Minnesota, Uffduh!

    1. Well that’s a good way of looking at it. Snow is MUCH better than bugs!

  1. What a cute pattern! I was so happy to see the mix of Lella Boutique and Corey’s Starberry fabrics as I have so much of both Christmas Morning and Christmas Eve fabrics and have been thinking that Starberry seems to have the same tones. I love the muted greens and reds. I also bought the Twas fabrics because of those adorable Santas and figures. Thank you! Love your patterns and have made several.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Cheryl! Yes I was really happy when I got a few samples of the green from Starberry. It is a very good green . . . nice, traditional, and a tad muted. 🙂

  2. This wall hanging is just adorable. Love the house surrounded by a wreath – so pretty!
