Autumn mug rugs

While it’s only early September, the leaves are already starting to turn colors in central Minnesota. Autumn is glorious but brief here, so it’s best to embrace the change of seasons. In that spirit, this past weekend I gifted my daughter and my son’s girlfriend with new autumn mugs and mug rugs.

If you are a faithful follower of Terri Staats from Sweet Treasures Quilts, then you may recognize the mug rug pattern I used.  It is from Terri’s Centerpiece Tablemat pattern, which was recently revamped to include four sizes: 9” mini mat (mug rug), 21” small mat, 31” medium mat and 45” large mat. I purchased the mugs at a local boutique called Weathered Revivals. They have such pretty gift items.

The golden toned fabrics in this mug rug (focal print, outer print and binding) are from Lella Boutique’s “Folktale” collection. The two pebble colored prints are from Lori Holt’s “Prim” collection.

The butterscotch orange fabrics in this mug rug (focal print, outer print) are from Fig Tree’s “Pumpkins & Blossoms” collection. You’ll have to forgive me, but I’m unsure about the binding fabric and the inner taupe prints. I found them in my stash and used them!

A few years ago, I made the 21” table mat using some treasured Fig Tree fabrics. Please visit that blog post if you would like details on how I finished my table mat with simple straightline quilting, which is the same method I used on the autumn mug rugs.

Terri’s instructions for this project are excellent; she even includes tips for binding those wide corners and for making the large mat into a Christmas tree skirt! If you are looking for a fun pattern for making seasonal gifts, the Centerpiece Tablemat is just the ticket!
