Hello quilting friends! Today I’m sharing my latest quick and easy project: a runner for my coffee station at home. This fat quarter friendly project is based on my free tutorial: Stacked Coins Table Runner. My next cup of coffee is going to taste better than ever, thanks to this pretty new setup!
This runner features a fresh country collection called Farm-to-Table by Windham Fabrics. I love how it looks with my rustic wooden box and other kitchen favorites, including my new (and first) Rae Dunn mug!
I do have to admit something to you. I ordered this fat quarter bundle from my sponsor, Four Peaches Fabric, without a plan. I just loved it, and so I bought it. I let it sit on my kitchen counter near my Keurig machine for a couple of weeks as I tried to decide what I would make. Eventually I decided this bundle called for a clean and simple patchwork pattern, so I went back to my own tutorial!
The original Stacked Coins Table Runner utilizes six fat quarters and finishes at 17” x 60 1/2”. That’s a great size for a large table, but for my coffee station, I wanted a shorter runner. I followed the instructions from my tutorial, but I only cut three strips from each of my six fat quarters, which resulted in a runner that was 36 1/2” long. The great thing about this tutorial is that you can easily customize it to fit the length you need!
I was all set to do some narrow matchstick quilting on this runner, but I just couldn’t bring myself to stitch over all of those cute roosters and barns and tractors! Instead I opted for simple straight line quilting, 1/8” from the seams, using Aurifil’s 80wt in chalk (2026). I’ve started to use 80wt occasionally when machine quilting, especially when I want a softer appearance. I’ve been very pleased with the results! I use a standard universal 80/12 needle and make sure I also have 80wt in the bobbin.
Oh, and did you happen to notice that cute binding fabric? In my stash I found a last bit of “Quilt Shop Names” from Sweetwater’s volume ii collection. I had auditioned several black and grey checks and stripes for the binding, but this fabric was the winner . . . a cream fabric with tiny text for binding . . . who knew?
